UVC Leds is a new type of ultraviolet light source. It has many advantages over the traditional mercury lamps.

Applications

UV light is usually divided into UVA(315nm-400nm), UVB(280nm-315nm), UVC(200nm-280nm) according to the wavelength. The Difference Between UVC LED and Traditional Mercury Lamps?

The traditional germicidal lamp is mercury lamp, mercury is highly toxic, once the lamp is broken, the leaked mercury will make a very serious harm to the human body and the environment. Deep ultraviolet UVC LED uses semiconductor chips to emit light, does not contain any toxic substances, it’s more environmentally friendly. UVC LED disinfection is a new sterilization method which can replace the traditional mercury UV lamps.

 

The difference between UVC LED and mercury UV lamps is as follows:

1. The light source is different: The UVC LED emits UVC light by the LED lamp bead, and the traditional mercury lamp emits UVC light by the mercury light bulb.

2. The emitted ultraviolet spectrum is different: UVC LED generally emits single peak wavelength(multiple peak LED combined, the spectrum is multi-peak), mercury ultraviolet lamp emits continuous wavelength spectrum, the wavelength range is generally very large.

3. Environmental protection: Mercury lamp contains harmful substances such as mercury, and the low-wave ultraviolet light of mercury lamp will produce ozone, which makes it necessary to install a ventilation exhaust system when using the mercury UV lamp. And the low-wave ultraviolet light of mercury lamp has great radiation harm to people, so it needs to be completely closed and shielded. The LED has no noise wavelength, no chemical pollution, and no harm to the human body.

4. Lifespan: UVC LED is a cold light source, its lifetime can reach 20000 hours, the lifetime of traditional mercury lamp is about 5000 hours. Compared to mercury lamps, UVC Leds last longer.

5. The unit size is different: The mercury lamp tube is large, and the lamp tube glass is fragile, it is difficult to integrate in small equipment, while the deep ultraviolet LED has a simple structure, does not contain fragile glass shell, portable and impact resistance, and it’s easily to be integrated in various equipments.

6. The working voltage is different: The working voltage of mercury lamp is high, and need to preheat. The working voltage of UVC Leds is only a few volts, no complex drive circuit, easy to use and easy to control.

 

UVC Leds were replacing the traditional mercury lamps in more and more elimination areas, and it has been widely used in home disinfection equipment, such as air purifiers, water purifiers, dishwashers, washing machines and so on. However, the electro-optical conversion efficiency of UVC Leds is very low, only about 3-5% electric energy is converted into UVC light when the UVC Leds working, and the remaining 95% is basically converted into heat. This results in the low radiation efficiency of deep UV leds, which is only 10% of that of low-pressure mercury lamps. And the price of UVC Leds at the same electrical power is high, it’s about 10 times that of low-pressure mercury lamps. So to obtain the same UVC radiation power, the cost of deep ultraviolet LED is about 100 times that of low-pressure mercury lamps.

 

In conclusion, UVC Leds has many advantages over traditional mercury lamps, It’s a future trend that the UVC Leds to replace mercury germicidal lamps. However, the small irradiation intensity, low photoelectric efficiency and high unit price are currently the main factors which is hinderring the replacement of UVC Leds to mercury lamps.
