What is a plano concave used to correct?

Plano concave lenses are typically used to correct hyperopia (farsightedness) and presbyopia (age-related difficulty focusing on near objects).

 

In hyperopic eyes, the eyeball is too short, causing light rays to focus behind the retina instead of on it. A diverging lens like the plano-concave lens compensates by shifting the focus onto the retina. The negative lens power causes the light to diverge slightly before reaching the eye, allowing proper focusing.

 

For presbyopia, as the eye ages, the lens stiffens and has more difficulty changing shape to shift focus from distant to near objects.
