Product Introduction

Cylindrical lenses have curved surfaces that focus or spread light in only one direction. They have refracting power in one meridian. Cylindrical optical lenses direct light unevenly along different axes- bending light more in one order than another. Their unique properties translate to essential benefits for many individuals and visual systems. Cylindrical optics elements, often used together with spherical lenses, make a crucial optics class.

We manufacture plano-convex cylindrical lenses with micron-level surface accuracy using advanced CNC grinding and polishing equipment. Our metrology laboratories ensure quality across all specifications- including surface power, curvature radius, refraction index, and dimensional tolerances. Besides, we provide fast turnaround at competitive prices for prototypes and volume production. Discover how our 20 years of expertise in cylindrical optics can support your product development and success in the marketplace. Contact us today to discuss your vision care, laser, imaging, or projection needs -- we look forward to crafting innovative cylindrical solutions for you!

Applications

The primary application is in vision correction for astigmatic individuals. They have allowed millions to correct their astigmatism and achieve clear, well-focused vision. Other minor applications of cylindrical lenses include collimating light bars, generating line foci, and shaping laser beams.

- Cylindrical excimer laser ablation

- Slit lamps in ophthalmology

- Microscopes

- Astigmatism correction

What is the difference between spherical and cylindrical lenses?

The main differences between spherical and cylindrical lenses are:

• Curvature of lens surfaces:

- Spherical lenses have lens surfaces with a circular curvature, like sections of a sphere.

- Cylindrical optical lenses have lens surfaces with a curvature in only one direction (cylindrical curvature). In the other direction, the surface is flat.

• Refraction of light:

- Spherical lenses refract (bend) light equally in all directions.

- Cylindrical optics only refract light parallel to the lens's cylindrical axis. Light perpendicular to this axis is not refracted.

• Applications:

- Spherical lenses are commonly used in applications where equal refraction in all directions is needed, e.g., simple magnifying glasses, spectacle lenses, and photographic lenses.

- Cylindrical optics are used where refraction needs to differ in different directions, e.g., in astigmatism correction, imaging systems with varying magnifications in other dimensions, and laser beam shaping.

• Aberrations:

- Spherical lenses suffer from spherical aberration due to the variable refractive power of light rays passing through different parts of the lens. Cylindrical lenses do not have this aberration.

- Cylindrical optics have astigmatic aberration for oblique incident light, which spherical lenses do not have.

• Focal points:

- Spherical lenses have a single focal point.

- Cylindrical optical lenses have two focal lines - one parallel to the cylindrical axis and one perpendicular.
