Recently, researchers from Columbia University in the United States published a research paper titled "Far-UVC light (222nm) efficiently and safely inactivates airborne human coronaviruses" online in Scientific Reports, a sub-journal of Nature. Studies have proven that far-UVC 222 nm ultraviolet rays can kill more than 99.9% of seasonal coronaviruses in air droplets.

The study's lead author, Dr. David Brenner, professor of vagus neurology at Columbia University's College of Medicine and Surgeon and director of the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia University Irving Medical Center said："Based on our findings, sustained air disinfection via C-band 222nm uvc lamp , within current regulatory limits, could substantially reduce levels of airborne viruses in indoor environments inhabited by humans."

A paper on the research was published June 24 in the journal Scientific Reports.The "Far-UVC" referred to in the paper is a part of UVC with a wavelength range of 207 nm to 222 nm. It can penetrate the genetic material of microorganisms and destroy the bonds of genetic material, preventing their replication, and achieve the purpose of disinfecting objects and air. However, it cannot penetrate the tear layer of the eye or the layer of dead cells surrounding the skin, and cannot reach or damage living cells in the body, so it cannot cause skin cancer or cataracts. Simply put, it is safe for humans but kills germs.

In previous studies, researchers have actually shown that C-band far-UV rays can safely kill airborne influenza viruses. The new paper extends their previous research to seasonal coronaviruses that are structurally similar to the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2)，which causes COVID-19.

In the study, the researchers used a spray device to aerosolize two common coronaviruses. Then, the coronaviruses contained in the aerosol flowed in the air in front of the C-band far-ultraviolet lamps. After the aerosols were exposed to C-band far-ultraviolet rays, the researchers tested to see how much virus remained alive.

The results of the study estimate that continuous exposure to far-ultraviolet rays, within current regulatory limits, would kill 90% of airborne viruses in about 8 minutes, 95% in about 11 minutes, and 99.9% in about 25 minutes.The sensitivity of coronaviruses to far ultraviolet light suggests that it may be feasible and safe to install overhead 222 nm lamp in occupied indoor public spaces, which can significantly reduce the risk of viruses spreading from person to person, such as the coronavirus and other viruses .

Brenner continued: "C-band far-UVC is safe to use in occupied spaces such as hospitals, buses, airplanes, trains, train stations, schools, restaurants, offices, theaters, gyms, and any indoor place where people can congregate. So it can be used in conjunction with other measures, such as wearing a mask or washing hands, to limit the spread of the new coronavirus and other viruses.
