Which ND filter is for a sunny day drone?
For drone photography on a sunny day, I recommend using a neutral density filter in the range of ND8 (3 stops) to ND32 (5 stops) of light reduction. These provide enough light control for the bright conditions when flying a drone while allowing reasonably fast shutter speeds to avoid motion blur from drone movement.
Some recommendations would be:
•ND8 (3 stops): This moderately reduces light and allows shutter speeds of around 1/125 sec on a sunny day with an aperture around f/5.6-f/8. It provides some flexibility over shutter speed and aperture while maintaining good overall exposure. A good all-purpose ND for most sunny day drone shots.
•ND16 (4 stops): Cuts enough light for shutter speeds around 1/60 sec and apertures of f/4 or wider on a sunny day. It allows more creativity over depth of field and is also effective for panning shots while following a moving subject.
•ND32 (5 stops): For very bright days or when you want maximum control over exposure. Allows shutter speeds as slow as 1/30 sec and apertures as wide as f/2.8, providing substantial flexibility in motion blur, depth of field, and overall exposure effects. Best if there is little wind for the sharpest results.
These mid-range ND filters, not above or low like neutral density ND128 filter 7 stops OD2.1, are dark enough to allow great control over shutter speed, aperture, and exposure on most sunny days but not so dark that shutter speeds become too slow for capturing sharp detail from a moving drone platform. An ND8 or ND16 is a good start, providing a balance of versatility and workability for general aerial photography where creative flexibility is desired beyond fully automatic exposure. They also avoid over-darkening the viewfinder, which can make composing and focusing shots through the built-in drone camera more difficult.
For videos, the relative shutter speeds these NDs allow also work well for typical frame rates used in aerial cinematography like 24p, 30p, and 60p. The slight motion blur can help footage appear more natural and cinematic.
