Why infrared thermal imaging and infrared thermometer glass must use germanium glass material?
Germanium glass, used on the window of an infrared thermometer, has sound-light transmission performance at 2-16um(mid-to-far light). Its chemical properties are stable---less likely to react with metal oxides, acidic substances, air, and water. In contrast, ordinary optical glass has extremely low transmittance in these wavelength bands, making it difficult to achieve.
Coating an optical film on IR narrow bandpass optical filter 808nm germanium glass can significantly increase its transmittance and reduce the surface's reflectivity. However, it is impervious to visible light.
We can also use silicon crystals instead of germanium glass in some thermal imagers, but its working band is narrower. Silicon (Si) single crystal has good light transmission performance in the 1-7μm band and 30-300μm far-infrared band, a feature that other infrared optical materials do not have. It is usually used for 3-5μm mid-wave infrared optical windows and optical filter substrates. Due to the material's good thermal conductivity and low density, it is common to make laser mirrors or infrared temperature measurements and optical lenses.
