The main ultraviolet light source in nature is the sun. When sunlight passes through the atmosphere, ultraviolet rays with a wavelength shorter than 290nm meters are absorbed by ozone in the atmosphere. The artificial ultraviolet light source has a variety of gas arcs (such as low-pressure mercury arc and high-pressure mercury arc). Ultraviolet has chemical action, which can make photographic negatives sensitive and have strong fluorescence. Fluorescent lamps, various fluorescent lamps and black light lamps used to trap and kill pests in agriculture all use ultraviolet to excite fluorescent substances to emit light. Ultraviolet rays can also prevent counterfeiting. Ultraviolet rays also have physiological functions, such as sterilization, disinfection and treatment of skin diseases and chondropathy. Ultraviolet rays have strong particle properties and can produce photoelectric effects on various metals.

Ultraviolet disinfection and sterilization is an ancient and effective method. Drying quilts in the sun is the original use of ultraviolet rays to remove mites, disinfect and sterilize.

Li Jinmin, director of the State Key Laboratory of semiconductor lighting joint innovation, said that the principle of ultraviolet disinfection and sterilization is to use high-energy ultraviolet light to break the double helix of DNA, so as to inactivate bacteria and viruses. To achieve effective sterilization and disinfection by ultraviolet light, we need to meet certain requirements. We should pay attention to the wavelength, irradiation dose and time of ultraviolet light source, that is, it must be deep ultraviolet light in UVC band with wavelength below 280nm. For different bacteria and viruses, we should meet certain irradiation dose and time, otherwise it cannot be inactivated.
