The commonly used 254nm UVC light has the characteristics of purely physical and effective sterilization, no secondary pollution, etc., has a wide range of effects in a large space environment, but direct exposure is harmful to the human body.

The new studies showed that there was no developing skin cancer or cataracts for a hairless mice with particularly sensitive skin after repeatedly radiation by filtered 222nm UVC light. Therefore it is proposed that deep ultraviolet radiation with a wavelength of 222 nm is harmless to human skin and eyes.

The disinfection and inactivation effect of 222 nm vs 254 nm

We read many experimental studies on the bactericidal effects of UVC irradiation, and sorted out the bactericidal data of 222nm and 254nm UVC, the comparison of 222nm and 254nm is as shown in the table below.

The table above shows the amount of energy(the total light exposure) required to achieve a sterilization or inactivation level of 99.9%(log3), the unit is mj/cm². From the table above, we can see that:

1.The same as 254nm UVC, the far UVC 222 nm also has a good disinfection effect for bacteria and viruses.

2. For endospore-forming bacteria, the far UVC 222 nm achieves sterilization with about half the energy required at 254 nm.

3. The far UVC 222 nm is also effective for suppressing growth of organisms with larger cells, such as molds.

4. 222 nm UVC is also effective for coronavirus, and it needs less energy than that required for other bacteria and viruses.


222nm UVC disinfection principle


When 222 nm led will be available?

In principle, we can make leds of almost any wavelength by adjusting the ratio of semiconductor alloys used. For example, gallium nitride (GaN), which forms the basis of most commercial leds, has a band gap of about 3.4 eV, corresponding to violet light emission with a wavelength of 360 nm. At the same time, aluminum nitride (AlN) has a band gap of about 6.4 eV, corresponding to natural emission at the very deep 210 nm in UVC. As a result, Al-GaN LEDs emit light at wavelengths somewhere in between, depending roughly on the ratio of aluminum to gallium.

Scientists have demonstrated far-ultraviolet leds based on such alloys in the lab. In 2006, Yoshitaka Taniyasu and his colleagues at the NTT Basic Research Laboratories in Atsugi, Japan, created AlN leds with emission wavelengths of 210 nm. In 2007, Hideki Hirayama and colleagues at the Riken Research Institute in Saitama, Japan, produced Al-GaN LEDs with emission wavelengths of 222 nm. However, the efficiency of these short wavelength UVC leds is extremely low and far from reaching the requirements of commercialization.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in early 2020, the demand for UVC bactericidal products expanded rapidly. And in the past two years, more and more new studies have demonstrated the safety characteristics of 222nm wavelength, also many companies already launched the 222nm products with an excimer light source. The research on 222 nm Leds is more and more hot, and scientists are working hard to improve the efficiency of far uvc led and make it reach the level of commercialization.

265-275nm UVC Led products have entered the market for a long time, and the light efficiency is getting higher and higher. The efficiency of the latest products can reach 6%. Although it is still far lower than that of mercury germicidal lamps which is 20-30%, the 265-275nm UVC Led has replaced the mercury germicidal lamps in some application scenarios. When the UVC Led wavelength goes shorter, the light efficiency decreases exponentially. The latest progress about UVC LED is as the table below.

Some companies already trial-produced the 226nm leds and 233nm leds, and used them to do the bactericidal test. However, their light efficiency is still very low compared to the commercial requirement. In view of the promising market for far uvc leds, the researchers are working hard to improve the light efficiency as quickly as possible, and it is expected to see the far uvc leds on the market within the next two years.
